Kanye West - "The Mask" Original Artwork

An original double-sided drawing by Kanye West, created during his formative art-school years in the 1990s, long before his rise in music, fashion, and design.
The front features a dramatic mask-like face rendered in graphite or charcoal, built through heavy shadow, sharp highlights, and strong tonal contrast. Much of the face is submerged in darkness, while the eyes, nose, and surrounding forms emerge through carefully preserved areas of white. The result feels sculptural — almost like the face is being carved out of the page through light and shadow.
What makes the piece even more compelling is the reverse. On the back, Kanye began another study of a head and face using loose construction lines and underlying guide marks. Rather than a finished image, it shows the earlier stage of the drawing process: establishing proportion, placement, and structure before adding detail.
Created before fame, this is the kind of work that gives context to the larger creative career that followed. You can already see an interest in faces, abstraction, contrast, form, and dramatic visual composition that would continue to surface throughout his work in music, fashion, and design.
The piece was originally sold through Julien’s Auctions in 2022.
