An original drawing by Kanye West, created during his formative art-school years in the 1990s, long before his career in music, fashion, and design made him a global figure.
This piece centers on a highly detailed eye and partial face, rendered in black ink with dense crosshatching, heavy shadow, and sharp, aggressive linework. Up close, the drawing has an almost restless quality to it — layers of ink, overlapping marks, and deep black areas build the image through contrast rather than clean outline alone.
The composition is especially striking because so much of the sheet remains untouched. The finished portion sits in the upper-left area, creating a dramatic amount of negative space around it. It is difficult to know whether Kanye intended the piece to remain this way or whether it represents an unfinished study, but that ambiguity is part of what makes it interesting. It feels less like a polished final artwork and more like a surviving experiment from an artist still developing his visual language.
Even at this early stage, you can see Kanye working with ideas that would continue to appear throughout his creative career: contrast, fragmentation, texture, distortion, and bold graphic imagery.
The work was originally sold through Julien’s Auctions in 2022 and bears the “Donda C. West” stamp on the reverse, linking it directly to the archive preserved by his mother.
