Before the albums, fashion, architecture, and larger creative universe, Kanye West was studying the fundamentals of visual art.

This original 9" × 12" art-class sheet dates to Kanye’s pre-fame years and offers a particularly raw look at him as a young art student — part classroom notes, part portrait practice, and part spontaneous doodling.

Across the page are several different face drawings, including a more developed female portrait and two rougher character sketches. The left side becomes much more chaotic, filled with overlapping lines, shapes, shading exercises, and loose scribbles.

The handwritten notes appear to focus on value in art, including concepts such as:

“the relative degree of lightness or darkness”

and:

“Value Pattern: The total effect of relationships … of light and dark within the pictorial field.”

This piece has recently been authenticated by JSA and is accompanied by a physical LOA.
