Before the albums, fashion, and larger creative universe, Kanye West was studying the fundamentals of visual art.

This original 9" × 12" art-study sheet dates to Kanye’s pre-fame art-school years and brings together several different exercises on a single page — including portrait studies, facial construction, shading, and landscape composition.

The most striking section is the lower-right portrait study, labeled “FOCUS ON DARKS,” where Kanye concentrates heavy graphite around one side of the face to study contrast and shadow. Elsewhere on the page are looser head studies, two outline figure sketches, and multiple landscape exercises exploring foreground, shape, and tonal value.

The page feels like a snapshot of Kanye actively learning how to simplify forms, build faces, create depth, and control light and dark.

That makes it especially compelling as an origin artifact. Long before he became known for obsessing over composition, silhouettes, album artwork, fashion, and visual presentation, he was working through those same basic artistic ideas on paper.

This piece has recently been authenticated by JSA and will be accompanied by a physical LOA.
