An original art studies / homework sheet by Kanye West, created during his formative art-school years in the 1990s, long before his career in music, fashion, and design.

Unlike a single finished drawing, this page feels almost like a snapshot of Kanye learning how to think as an artist.

Executed primarily in graphite pencil on an approximately 8.5" × 11" sheet, the page contains several different studies. At the top is a carefully rendered portrait of Lee Atwater, showing Kanye working through facial structure, proportion, light, and shadow. Beneath it is a partially developed landscape study, accompanied by handwritten notes discussing fundamental artistic principles including balance, unity, movement, proportion, emphasis, line, shape, and visual organization.

The reverse adds another layer to the piece. Kanye continued using the sheet for experimentation, sketching additional imagery including a shoe study, architectural/structural forms, and another landscape composition. Rather than presenting a polished finished artwork, the page preserves the process itself — observation, practice, note-taking, experimentation, and revision all happening on the same sheet.

That is what makes this piece especially interesting within Kanye’s early body of work. Decades before he would apply many of these same ideas to album packaging, stage design, footwear, fashion, and architecture, here he is literally writing down and practicing the basic principles of visual design.

The sheet also bears the “Donda C. West” stamp, connecting it directly to the group of early Kanye artworks preserved by his mother.

Originally offered through Julien’s Auctions in 2022, this is a particularly intimate artifact from Kanye’s pre-fame years — not simply an early drawing, but evidence of the education and experimentation behind the creative career that followed.
