An original 18" x 24" figure drawing by Kanye West, created during his art school years in the 1990s, well before his rise to fame.
This piece centers on a single seated figure, giving a direct look at Kanye working through one of the more difficult challenges in figure drawing: understanding how the body changes when weight is shifted, limbs overlap, and the torso compresses into a seated position.
Unlike some of his faster gesture studies, this work feels more deliberate and developed. Kanye spends more time defining the figure’s anatomy, the bend of the leg, the placement of the arms, and the relationship between the torso and lower body. Areas of heavier graphite and shading around the torso and beneath the arms suggest that he was also studying light, shadow, depth, and three-dimensional form rather than simply recording an outline.
Created during his pre-fame art school period in Chicago, this is another surviving artifact from the years when Kanye was developing the visual instincts and creative foundation that would later extend far beyond music.
The piece was originally offered through Julien’s Auctions in 2022 and bears his mother's Donda C. West stamp on the reverse, connecting it directly to Kanye’s early family-held archive.
