An original 18" × 24" drawing by Kanye West, created during his formative art-school years in the 1990s, long before his career in music, fashion, and design made him a global figure.
This piece is especially interesting because it reads almost like a page from a visual notebook. Across the sheet, Kanye studies a series of different human poses and body positions, ranging from bent and crouched figures to more extended, expressive gestures. Rather than presenting a single finished composition, the page captures him actively working through movement, proportion, balance, and the mechanics of the human figure.
What makes the piece even more personal is the handwritten labeling throughout. Kanye captions several of the studies with words such as “Vogue,” “The Trot,” “Begging,” and “Hiding,” pairing each pose with an idea or action. That combination of image and language gives the page a more conceptual quality and offers a glimpse into how he was already thinking about posture, attitude, and visual storytelling.
Pieces like this are compelling because they preserve the learning process itself. You can see an artist experimenting, observing, and trying to translate movement into line years before the world knew his name.
The work was originally sold through Julien’s Auctions in 2022 and bears the “Donda C. West” stamp on the reverse, connecting it directly to the archive preserved by Kanye’s mother.
