An original 18" x 24" gesture drawing by Kanye West, created during his art school years in the 1990s, long before the albums, fashion houses, and cultural influence that would later define his career.
This piece is especially interesting because it shows Kanye working through gesture drawing studies — quick, instinctive sketches designed to capture movement, rhythm, posture, and energy rather than polished detail. Across the sheet are numerous figures in different poses, drawn with loose, fluid lines that document the process of an artist learning how to understand the human form through motion.
Rather than a finished illustration, this is closer to looking directly into Kanye's sketchbook process. You can see him studying balance, anatomy, movement, and proportion in real time — the fundamentals that would help shape the visual instincts he carried into the rest of his creative career.
The work dates to Kanye's pre-fame Chicago art school period and was originally offered through Julien's Auctions in 2022. The reverse bears the handwritten/stamped name of his mother, Donda C. West, adding another remarkable layer of provenance to the piece.
More than simply an early drawing, this is a surviving piece of Kanye's creative education — from a period when he was still developing the artistic language that would eventually extend far beyond the page.
