An original 18" x 24" figure study by Kanye West, created during his art school years in the 1990s, long before his rise to fame in music, fashion, and design.
This piece offers an especially clear look at Kanye developing the fundamentals of figure drawing and human anatomy. The sheet features two separate figure studies alongside a larger, more concentrated study of the human foot. Rather than approaching the page as a finished composition, Kanye appears to be using it as an exercise in observation — working through proportion, posture, musculature, contour, and individual anatomical forms.
The contrast between the full and partial figures and the enlarged foot study makes the piece feel almost like a page pulled directly from an artist's working portfolio. You can see him breaking the human body down into separate problems to solve: how a torso turns, how weight is carried through a pose, how a foot is constructed, and how individual forms relate to the body as a whole.
That unfinished, exploratory quality is exactly what makes these early works so compelling. This isn't Kanye creating for an audience. It's Kanye learning, experimenting, and building the visual foundation that would eventually become part of a much larger multidisciplinary creative career.
Created during his pre-fame art school period in Chicago, the work was later offered through Julien's Auctions in 2022. The reverse bears the Donda C. West marking, connecting the piece directly to Kanye's early family-held archive.
