An extraordinary original handwritten lyric sheet from the earliest chapter of Kanye West’s creative life — years before The College Dropout, Grammy Awards, fashion, or worldwide fame.

Titled “Chicago City At Night,” this one-of-one sheet was handwritten by Kanye in blue ink during the 1990s, while he was still a young artist and rapper in Chicago. The piece dates to the period when Kanye was attending art school and developing his earliest music, and it is believed to be connected to his first rap group, State of Mind.

This is the kind of artifact that captures Kanye before the world knew his name: raw lyrics, crossed-out lines, revisions, unfinished thoughts, and ideas developing directly on the page.
